Description: The Whippet is a breed of dog in the sighthound family. They are active, alert and playful and are physically similar to a small greyhound. Some people call the Whippets "The Poor Man's Greyhound".
History: The first written English use of the word "whippet" with regard to a breed of dog was in 1610. Whippets were bred to hunt by sight, coursing game in open areas at high speeds. One can find numerous paintings & sketches of small greyhound-like hounds that closely resemble the Whippet in art dating back to the Roman times.
Temperament: The Whippet is intelligent, lively, affectionate and sweet. This very devoted companion is quiet and calm in the home. Good around children and other pets.The Whippet dog is very loyal to it's family.
Height: Male Dogs: 19 to 22 inches. Female Dogs: 18 to 21 inches. On average.Weight: Male Dogs: 25 to 45 pounds. Female Dogs 22 to 42 pounds. On average.
Health Problems: The Whippet dog breed tends to have problems with the stomach and can have skin problems also. This of course relates directly to the bloodline and parents genetics.
Living Condition: The Whippet doesn't like cold weather. They are generally a calm dog so they can live in an apartment or condo.
Exercise Required: Being an active breed they do require sufficient exercise. Preferably daily walks or a fenced yard.
