Description: The West Siberian Laika, or WSL, is a breed of hunting dog developed by the indigenous people of Northern Ural and West Siberia.
Temperament: When properly raised & trained West Siberians make a strong bond with their masters & never lose contact with them in the woods or over open terrain. West Siberians are considered poor guardians at home or for domestic stock. During hunting dangerous game they are capable of protecting their human partners to the bitter end. The West Siberian Laika is a highly alert and active dog. They are also highly territorial and aggressive with other dogs so pairing them with other breeds is not suggested.
Height and Weight: The West Siberian Laika is considered a Large breed dog.Males are on average 20 to 25 inches at the shoulders. Females a little shorter.
Living Condition: The West Siberian Laika dog breed needs a fenced yard or large area to roam. Not ideal for an apartment or condo. Because of their thick coat they don't tend to like hot weather.
Exercise Required: Daily exercise is suggested. You should take your West Siberian Laika for daily walks or runs. A fenced in yard is strongly suggested.
Life Expectancy: 12-15 years on average
Litter Size: 3-5 puppies per litter on average
Grooming: The West Siberian Laika dog tends to have a thick double coat which can be groomed as you wish. The puppy cut is an option or you can let it grow. Other hair cut options are available at your local groomer. Ask to see pictures of the different hair styles your dog groomer has available.
